When I played offensive center as a HS soph at 205-215 lbs, the guys who gave me fits on the defensive line were the small quick guys. Does anyone here recall Alan Page playing defensive tackle as an NFL professional - yes, pro football - late in his career at 6'4" 235 lbs? Don't get so hung up on bulk.
You can't compare lineman from <80s to the current linemen, its a completely different breed.
