Depends on the conference you are in. I too was a guard at a massive 5'7" 175lbs, and All-Conference.

As for what to do, at his size he first must be mentally prepared to go against g uys that are most likely 30-50lbs if not more bigger than him. That's the first step. If you do not have the mental toughness or tenacity, you aren't going anywhere.

Second, I would work on leg strength. If I didn't have my legs, I would have not done squat on the line. My upper body wasn't as strong comparitvely to some of the other guys on the team. My max bench was only 270lbs.

As someone else also noted, quickness, and footwork are another essential for guards. Pulling, either trapping or to lead block on a sweep are where guards typically shine. And if you are as fast or even just a tick slower than your running back, they will love you.
