Originally posted by PlatoSVT: Just to throw in my experience here. Calm is not necessarily a good thing. In my past, calm dogs (especially young ones) are the ones that have been abused/have issues. I'm not saying that the dog shouldn't be given a chance, but I know that I've seen a "calm" dog get home from adoption and turn into an absolute human hater when it came down to it. Either way, nice job on the save, maybe you've got room for one more that needs alot of love/patience!
Nonsense.
My adopted dog was horribly abused. She was afraid of everything at 7 months old. Reach out to pet her & she'd cowar & run away. She was afraid of tennis balls even! Sad. Took nearly two years to get her to the level of trust she has now.
My neighbors now tell me she's the best dog they've ever seen. Protective of the neighborhood, protective of my family in particular, but will also defend any of the women or children in the neighborhood. She proved that one night when somebody was sneaking up on the next door neighbor lady. She's never bitten anybody except when I chased off a burglar. I told her to 'git him' and DAYUM, she did! The street has been theft free ever since. My 2 year old nephew comes over every weekday and they play for hours. Tugs her tail, twists her ears, pokes her eyes, walks on her, rides her, pulls on her collar... She just turns & licks him in the face. Best dog EVAR!
She is so good, we took her on the Dragon in 2003. She weathered the long drive very well and was an absolute joy to have with us at the Little Tennessee River - great dog!
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
