Yesterday, our family had the shock of our lives.
First, the lead-up. At the back of our house, there are two fences. Our fence is about 7 feet tall, a wire fence. The fence behind it is about 5 feet tall. After the hurricane last year, our fence was bent a little over our property, leaving a pretty significant gap between some parts of the fence.
Okay, now the big part. Yesterday, while we were watching TV in our family room, we heard our dog, Duke (a German Shepherd/Rott?/Chow Chow? mix), barking up a storm. I looked out our window, and I found a long, white object between the two fences, which Duke was barking at. I go outside to see what it is, and I had the shock of my life.
It was ANOTHER DOG!
Yes, a dog was placed there a few minutes before Duke caught attention of it.
The dog had no collar, had a few wounds on her body (yes, it was a girl dog), and was thin. I pulled Duke away, as he was trying to bite the intruder. We pulled the fence out of the way, and my dad guided the dog into one of our dog cages (which was already there when we bought the house). She was very scared. Those big brown eyes of hers said it all.
We tried feeding her, but she didn't want to eat. We also gave her some water, and she drank a little bit of it, she just stayed in the cage, and fell asleep.
Our only choice was to take the dog (whom we named Destiny) to the local shelter. We couldn't keep the dog. If we had kept her, and nursed her back to health, the indignant owner might come back and claim her again (seeing that we have two dogs that are well-kept, the indignant owner left her there thinking we'd keep her). Plus, with three attempted car robberies taken place there within the last six months (one was successful), we didn't want to take any chances. We had already seen vandalism (for some reason, the Haitian immigrants there hate us), and we didn't want to do anything to sour our neighborhood.
On top of that, we already have two dogs (the other is a Chihuahua). Another one would throw everything off.
Last night, we took her to the shelter. They'll give her 5 days, a vet, and the chance to be adopted (she was very nice).
The dog was white, with brown patches on her face. She was still a puppy (about 6 to 8 months old), and she has a good bit of pit bull in her. She's staying at the Palm Beach County Animal Rescue on Belvedere Road just past the Turnpike (for those of you in South Florida interested in adopting her).
Is my car for sale? PM me if you're in South FL.

I think we have an indian burial ground on some of our land. I am not going to dig up the hills to find out and be haunted for the rest of my life.
Oh yeah, hope someone takes the dog to a good home.

There's one supposedly under the campus of Loyola Marymount University in LA.
Yes, I hope the dog will get a good owner, and I think she will. She's a very calm dog.

Just to throw in my experience here. Calm is not necessarily a good thing. In my past, calm dogs (especially young ones) are the ones that have been abused/have issues. I'm not saying that the dog shouldn't be given a chance, but I know that I've seen a "calm" dog get home from adoption and turn into an absolute human hater when it came down to it. Either way, nice job on the save, maybe you've got room for one more that needs alot of love/patience!

Nonsense.
My adopted dog was horribly abused. She was afraid of everything at 7 months old. Reach out to pet her & she'd cowar & run away. She was afraid of tennis balls even! Sad. Took nearly two years to get her to the level of trust she has now.
My neighbors now tell me she's the best dog they've ever seen. Protective of the neighborhood, protective of my family in particular, but will also defend any of the women or children in the neighborhood. She proved that one night when somebody was sneaking up on the next door neighbor lady. She's never bitten anybody except when I chased off a burglar. I told her to 'git him' and DAYUM, she did! The street has been theft free ever since. My 2 year old nephew comes over every weekday and they play for hours. Tugs her tail, twists her ears, pokes her eyes, walks on her, rides her, pulls on her collar... She just turns & licks him in the face. Best dog EVAR!
She is so good, we took her on the Dragon in 2003. She weathered the long drive very well and was an absolute joy to have with us at the Little Tennessee River - great dog!
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I'm not saying that the dogs are not recoverable. I think there's way too much to factor into it to simply say that all abused dogs will turn out rotten. I'm just saying that it's one thing to consider, along with temperment and the adopter's ability to have patience/love through the adaptation of the dog. I also feel that an abused dog will either lash out or crawl back, depending on it's temperment. When you have a dog that crawls back after being abused, I think that it's a little easier to adapt their personality rather than one that simply strikes back at all humans after abuse. Good success story though, my family has always had mutts from the pound, and although we've had some tough cases, we have absolutely astounding dogs! I'll always adopt from here on out. No sense in not saving a dog.
