Yes, this was done in the old days to cool off hot engines between/before runs. I don't recall tales of broken blocks and manifolds from ice damage. But a pile of ice to cool multiple cubic feet of intake air while the vehicle is moving? Too much weight of ice to be carried to get much air temp drop benefit. Yes, doing an intercooler to drop the temp of compressed air down toward normal uncompressed outdoor temp can be done without much weight. But to actively drop the temp of intake air to BELOW normal outdoor temp? That's refridgeration, and that's heavy.
