I have a 2000 SVT Contour with like 40k miles on it. i just returned from a deployment to Iraq, but while i was gone my dad drove it once a week or so. Anyways, when the car has a full tank of gas it runs great, when it's to about a half a tank it will hesitate or bog down (major loss of power) and it sticks at like 2,500 rpm and there is nothing you can do until you get more gas. I am looking for some guidance on this issue please. The first time it happened i put a can of "dry gas" in the tank and it fixed the problem, but now that does nothing. Any ideas fellas?

Replace the pump now before it gets worse...I got stranded with mine trying to hold off.

It is pretty easy to change yourself too. You can get one on-line reletively cheap and just follow the instructions listed above.

One thing of slight concern...the pump comes with a new fuel level sensor, which my new one worked nowhere as good as the old one. I ended up reopening the tank and swapping the pump with the old level sensor I had.

Best of luck...

Joey,

It's not an issue witht he pump itself, just the pickup screens.

If it was the pump, the problem would not be restricted to fuel levels below 1/2 tank.

Okay...mine was the pump with the same exact issues. Screens were clean on the one I pulled off.

Only thing I could think is that the pump had to work harder when the tank was empty as opposed to it keeping submersed.

My car (99 CSVT) is doing the same thing. Only mine stalls when I make hard left turns up hills. PUTT! PUTT! - wait wait - level ground - OK again.

Is this really the pump screens?

The pump was replaced two years ago - it has never been like it was before. Now I just baby it with full tank all the time and hope it doesn't die.

I am currently getting ready to pull the pump again and look but I can't get the dang fuel line off - see other post.

Anyone know why these pumps suck (or don't)? As you can tell by my id - jagman - why don't they put the pumps in the trunk with the fuel filter so they can be serviced easier. My 85 Fuel Injected Jag is a snap to work on - but I digress.
