There is no particular year that I would stay away from. All the SVT years are very similar, although the 99 - 00 did gain 5 hp! Anyways, if you pick up a well maintained low mileage SVT, then you should have a great and pretty reliable car.
I looked around a little in the classifieds here and sent a couple e-mails..
There's a black '99 close by with a 3L done already.. 
That would be a nice pickup. What sort of numbers would someone expect with just the swap done?
