Is there an actual tensioner for the alternator belt, or is the alternator itself serving as a tensioner. Id run out there and luck except its pouring and dark, and my curiousity is killing me.

Reason Im asking is because my battery light has been flickering near redline for 2 YEARS!!! That makes me think its likely not the alternator. The battery is new as well. That would lead me to think, ok, its the belt, except, the belt was replaced when the water pump was replaced and there is no squeeling going on.

Which, unfortunately, brings me back to the alternator....agreed? Can someone explain the 2 years without any other problems?

The tensioner is the "silver lever looking part" with the square hole and a pulley at the bottom. The square hole is where you put a 3/8 inch ratchet or serpentine belt removal tool to release the tension to remove the belt.

Thanks. Its definately not the belt then. I just had a new serpentine belt put on.

For some reason I was thinking the belt was on the driver side.

So, whos thinking alternator, and why the two years?

Woah! Hold it! I just reread your original post. The water pump is on the driver side with a WP belt (for the V6). If you replaced the WP belt, that is a different belt from the alternator serpentine belt. The alternator serpentine belt is on the passenger side. And that could be the problem.

Edit. WP belt on the driver side

Haha, I beat you to it. I realized we were talking about different belts as soon as I saw the pic.

Try changing the alternator serpentine belt first and see if that helps.

Your third post was confusing. When you posted driver side, I thought you changed the WP belt and not the serpentine belt. Good night!

Itâ??s a common problem; the brushes are â??floatingâ? in your alternator at hi RPM.
