Someone please help, I just purchased a 2000 Contour SE with 108K miles. The engine runs good but at highway speeds, 70-75 MPH the transmission acts like it's dropping out of gear, and or searching for the correct gear. It will show 3200RPM on the tach, but then it will spike to about 4500 RPM, and the car will surge. It feels like it's dropping into neutral. Sometimes it will run excellent and wont do it, and other times it will just "turd out" on me. I was thinking the transmission oil level was incorrect and this could be causing this problem. On the auto tranny it has a switch to prevent the engine from over reeving while in either neutral or park, could this some how be causing the problem? I have changed the fuel filter because of the surging, but then I realized a bad fuel filter won't cause the RPM to spike. Any help would be appreciated. I have even tried to diagnos the problem by turning off the overdrive and it still does it.
When in doubt shoot it out, it's better to be tried by 12 then carried by 6.

I just sneaked out of the office and went and had the tranny fluid changed. It made a difference in the way the car acted. I checked it Sunday and it appeared a little old, had a slight tint to it. I noticed a considerable more amount of acceleration and it didn't drop out of gear at all. I'll know more this evening when I have to make the long haul back to the house. Many thanks

is there a point as to when it is advisable to no longer change the fluid? so that the tranny does not develop more problems like slipping or such from the new fluid?

New fluid won't cause a good transmission to slip.
You're stuck in a particular automotove urban myth.

Well the 40 mile drive home yesterday proved that it wasn't the fluid. For some reason it is still doing this and it did it again this morning on the way to te office. Maybe i'm not being clear enough. What are the symptoms of the over drive going out? Also does this particular model have a kickdown cable? Would it need to be adjusted? That is what it feels like. The RPM will spike from 3500RPM to 4000 RPM but as soon as I let off the gas peddle it will go back to normal. If a throttle position sensor was going out would it do this? I also noticed it will happen when doin 55MPH. And it's occuring at about half throttle. i also noticed this morning that the neutral/ park rev limiter kicked in while traveling at 60 MPH, the tach spiked and the rev limiter kicked in at 45ooRPM.
