In Isarael's view, it dates back to Old Testament literature where God promised the land to them. So I guess you could start there.
However, they didn't have it. Now they do. And religion should never (but always does) have any effect on politics. A new country should not have been created (read stolen) from the land of an already existing one because the US or UN or whatever wanted a presence in the Middle East. Total abuse of power in my opinion.
By the way, I am not saying I am anti Jewish in any way, but come on. ARRRGH!!!
