today i got my house phone bill and it was mighty high. i noticed that i was charged $20 a minute for a call to a 900 number. wich is odd because i dont even have a phone on my line just my computer and use a cell for all my calls. so i called up sprint to see what was up and they told me the bill was sent by a third party company saying they had authorization to charge it to my phone account. the third party billing company's number was there so i called them up. it was atlantic mmanagement. so i called them to find out what i was being billed for and they todl me that another company bille dme through them and that i authorized the charge and they just collect the bill. so i asked them who was the company making the charge and they said they couldnt tell me due to privacey reasons. all they said was that it was authorized online on a certain day and time. so i told them i never authorized it and that if they cant even tell me what the charge is for and who its from than you better cancel it out. so they said that they would take care of it and that it would take 2 billing cycles. i belive it was caused by spareware or virus that got onto my pc in wich i had to erase my harddrive to get rid of it and reinstall windows and everything else. whoever is running this scam needs to be locked up. who could i report this scam too?

don't know who you'd report to, 'cept maybe FBI.
definitely refuse to pay it though. fight it to the end, and don't pay it.

That sucks! There are just too many people out there right now with WAY too much time on there hands. Come on people work like everyone else.
Fight it to the death. (OK maybe not that far). I'm sure they are relying on people not noticing or just getting sick of the run around...

i didnt pay it sprint but the charge under dispute. maybe i should report it to the better business bureau ?

To answer the topic, you had a dialer installed on your computer. Odds are it was piggybacking on a website that used an ActiveX control that wasn't signed.
It'll be tough to get out of your system, and you likely can't even see it.
Only go to reliable porn sites from now on.

The BBB is a worthless joke. Your best bet is to report it to your state's Attorney General, the US Attorney General, and the FCC. They actively pursue scams like this, and have the power to enforce punishment.

the only way i was able to get rid of it was format my hard drive and reinstall everything. plus backing up a bunch of files , the dvd burner was real usefull for that.

my father works for SBC. he told me about this scam quite some time ago. its getting more common and can be a real pain to undue. the phone company does pretty much nothing to help the customer out on this one. and it seems the other companies are in cahoots with each other. make sure you stay on top of it and report it. $20 a minute? if that doesnt sound like that company's in on it then i dont know what does.
