Well I just deleted Norton and switched over to AVG free. Yippee! no scanning every five seconds!!!

AVG Free and Avast Home edition are both good and free. ClamAV, a true open source app, is good but I don't believe it does real time file scanning.

I downloaded the trial of NOD32 and I like it so far. I think I'll buy it when the trial is up.

AVGFree has a big following but it's (lack of)effectiveness in many indedendent tests bothered me. I'd rather pay a little bit for better protection.

true true, I often find myself disabling automated scans because installing, unraring, and downloading can take longer, but when your comp is running at 3.36GHz with a gig of ram it aint all that bad.
