Completely new to this type of thing. I have a 99 contour SE, V6 engine, and I need a guide or maybe some pointers to replacing the starter. Got the part and everything, but where should I be looking for the piece?

I hope others join in with suggestions on how to change it.

The starter is on the driver's side, on the topside, in the "V" area, below the throttle body, sort of even with or below the intake manifold.

The two mounting bolt heads face up. One or both are awkward to get too. After you remove enough around it, the one difficult bolt becomes accessable. How much do you need to remove? I don't remember, but it should become eevident as you get into it. Start by removing the engine air intake tube from between the air box and the throttle body.

I did mine in the past month. Wasn't too hard but the engine bay is sooooo tight... I had some trouble getting mine loose once I got the bolts and wires unfastened. Had to bang on it for a few minutes and rock it back and forth (I actually got a blister from grabbing it and rocking it side to side. It took 4 hands to get it out once loose, to move tubes and wires etc. out of the way.

Check this thread, page 4 bottom (Arrow B) for a photo. Remove the airbox/ filter, MAF etc. first. It is basically directly beneath the TB. Round, with 2 up facing bolts to remove, and then wires facing driver's side.

Good luck!

According to the hayes manual you should disconnect the fuel line. I do not. I remove the filter assembley, battery (good shelf for tools). Then I partially drain the coolant and remove the hoses to the front of the starter. (3?). This allows you to get the front bolt out with out much trouble. Either tie the hoses back or have someone hold them when you are removing the bolt. Then remove the starter carefully and install all parts in reverse order. Be a patient and all will go well. I should add that the above works well on my 96 SE Your 99 may be not be the same.
