If you have used the new Celeron D 775 socket before, it is a huge improvement on the old design. Basically, it is nothing but a earlier model P4. The specs are the same as what a P4 used to be, and very cheap.

I still prefer a Sempron over a Celeron though. To me though, it seems stupid on AMDs part to sell a proc not far off in performance from the Athlon. I don't think I would ever buy a Athlon now with the performance I've seen come from the Sempron at a much lower cost.

I have to agree. I had a duron 700mhz a few years back. Nothing to brag about, but what a work horse that computer was. It's still in use today as a matter of fact, gave it to a friend.

BUT, as long as he's not looking to do serious multimedia, video encoding or intense games...the celeron will be fine.

Honestly, the only thing i see that brings up a red flag as far as performance goes, is the hard drive you're using. You can get a huge, fast drive for under $100 ( i buy 80gb WD's with 8mb cache for $54!) and it will perform noticeably better.

Just read the original post:

If you are keeping the original drive just for software reasons then . You cannot just toss around hard drives from one computer to another without reinstalling the OS. It will not boot unless the IDE controller almost matches the original. (i.e. earlier model SiS chipset to a new model SiS)

The fact that you have kept the drive around from all the way back to 98 then over to 2000, and then XP, the computer will have some serious lag issues going on by doing that.

Just a technicians $.02

yeah I know the hard drive is probably semi slow. I would have to look up online what the seek time is. I know its not horrible though. Plus there is ~400 dollars worth of software on it, if not more.

I'm still not sure how an AMD that is 1.8 or 2.0 ghz is faster then a 3.2ghz intel. The steps are shorter in the AMD, but I don't know how another 1.2ghz could not out do that.

But do you have the software installed and plan on still using it? Or do you have the actual setup and installation files saved?

That is the wrong reason to save an old hard drive. You do know you can clone from one hard drive to another right?

If you can somehow get the old HD to boot on the new setup, buy a new drive and Ghost it.

Read my last post.

lol I wiped the drive clean for the XP install. I just meant that its been around that long.

And yes I use office all the time for school. and XP is kinda used all the time.

I also have visual studio installed. Which I don't use as much as I use too.

EDIT:

And the drive dropped and played from a P2 Gateway into the P4. It just went about re-installing all the drivers.

EDIT 2:

Also I only filled the 20 GB once to the point of worry and I just burned alot of media files (manly video and pictures from my camera) to cd's.

The drive was formated when I installed XP. Afterwards I installed Office XP and visual studio.

The big thing is I don't need to get a new drive(cost effective), and I don't have to waste a day re-installing and tranfering all my crap to a new drive (headache effective).

The whole story is not in the numbers, it's the architecture that they use to handle the processes and AMD beats Intel 9.9 times out of 10. I have an old AMD mobile cpu OC'd running 2.4 Ghz and it benchmarks higher than a 3.4 Ghz P4. It's how they handle information that makes them faster.
A new 7200 rpm hard drive would be a good idea.
Here you go. 250 GB, 7200 rpm, 5 year warranty $79 frog skins!

Sorry if it seems like I'm piling on... but how much is your budget? I can see temporarily limping by on the hard drive while saving up for a better one. However, I don't see any excuse for the existence of the Celeron chip.

Either spring for a Pentium or go for an AMD chip. There's no point building a new computer if you're going to do it half-"donkeyed"
