about 93k miles on the car. Auto trans. (no supercharger)

This past weekend i went to the sabres game in buffalo and on the trip from rochester to buffalo driving was smooth as butter. On the trip back from Buffalo to Rochester, my car begain to go wacko. As soon as i got on the expressway my car would studder(sp?) all the way up to cruising speed and would barely be able to maintain that speed with the constant sputtering. I began to see my coolant temp guage gradually climb closer and closer to the red (closer than ever before). As soon as it bordered the red zone i pulled over, popped the hood and saw that i had zero coolant remaining. I happed to have some water bottles so i filled it up pretty close to the full line. After letting it cool down a bit, I started it back up. The engine was running pretty rough but the temp was staying down. I got back up to cruising speed (barely) only to drive a mile or 2 and see the temp climbing back up. At this point i pulled over to let it cool again. Once again the coolant was no where to be seen, even though i didn't see any leaks. I was going to try and limp it another 6 miles but when i went to turn it on there was nothing but a small jerk in the engine.

After getting it towed back to Rochester to my parents mechanic, his conclusion was that it needs a new intake manifold. I was just wondering how the hell an intake manifold would keep a car's engine from turning over. I personally thought the engine had seized but that's just me. Any confirmation on the intake manifold being able to stop the engine? Any other ideas of what it could be? Thanks!

My shop manager bought a 3.8 oldsmobile off of someone with the same problem. So yes, it's possible.

I had a problem with the intake on my 93' Regal w/ the 3800, but it didn't cause my car to run bad, but rather made it leak coolant. The price for the repair, $800.00 I'm thinking the cat is plugged up and the motor is trying to get its fumes through there, just an , good luck to you!
