Not wearing hearing protection anytime you fire a firearm is stupid. Even when firing a .22, it's very important. Your ears are sensitive instruments that degrade with use, and the more high-volume sounds you hear, the sooner they wear out. I ALWAYS wear plugs AND muffs when shooting.

I already have enough problems hearing.
Even with hearing protection, I have been in an indoor range with someone several bays away firing some hand cannon and it made my ears hurt even with my "ears" on.
Made my .45 sound like a cap gun.
Then there was that H&K carbine I fired that I could hardly hear at all. I could actually hear the bolt cycle every time I fired.
