Hearing protection is for pansies (on an outdoor range). It's a pistol not a .50 caliber.

He's is right on that account; you'll want to pop a few rounds off just every now and then just to get an idea of the blast that's going to assail your senses. Do this OUTDOORS and away from anything that will reflect the sound back towards you (don't stand under trees and do this), unless your a fan of long-term hearing loss (which means don't even THINK about taking your muffs off at an indoor range). The sound can send your head for a spin, especially with quick, repetitive shots.
I have a bit of upper-freq loss due to being a dips**t teenager that decided to completely unload a semi-auto Benelli 12 gauge in a barn one summer day; rats in the hay were just too tempting of a target. My ears rang for close to a week and it did stun the snot out of me...

If you are a frequent shooter, talk to me again about this in 10-15 years; I might be interested in finding out what kind of hearing aids you will be using...
I use plugs outdoors and muffs indoors; I still like to hear cymbal crashes and flutes when I listen to music (well, at least as much as I can).

I would reccomend trying this catalog web page they deal in all sorts of handguns and they have great prices . You have to get the gun shipped to a dealer and then pick it up. I bought a compact 40 cal steyr and love it. If you are going for home/ business I would suggest a revolver. If you are trying to hold a door shut or work a phone you do not have to worry about a jamb and having to cycle the gun to clear it.

If I was shooting a ton of rounds, I'd probably wear ear protection too, it'd probably be annoying not too from just the repetitive noise. Though I haven't worn any with the shooting I've done so far, but that's mainly been hunting or sighting in a gun. Though I really won't miss hearing flutes.

yeah... they have this thing... it's called the idpa, and that's exactly the circumstances they compete under.

The bottom line is He asked, I gave my opinion which we all know what they are like. I knew I would get flack about that post, but if you want to know the truth, if just one person thinks before buying a gun and makes a good choose then it was worth it. I don't want to see anyone get hurt or worse with a gun. We already have enough Darwin candidates with out one coming from this site.

yeah, i just noticed that... lol. sorry... meant it to come out about the statement being idiotic, not you.
anyways, i think what Jato is saying is the best answer. doing it once and a while so you know what to expect is fine. doing it all the time will cause severe hearing loss.
