we are allowed to carry in the office and in most of our company vehicles. a couple of the other employees are packing moost of the time now. our boss is the one that suggested we do this if it would make us more comfortable.

thanks for all the good advice guys! i will be referencing this thread when it comes time to purchase a gun.

yeah... they have this thing... it's called the idpa, and that's exactly the circumstances they compete under.

is carrying for everyone? of course not. but don't be a fool and think that only cops or ex-military are capable of using a handgun in a self-defense scenario.

spend as much time at the range as you can, get some training, and above all, ALWAYS use hearing protection... no matter what some idiot on the net says!!!

Nobody is telling him to plan a "stakeout" or do "combat sweeps" of the perimeter. Basic instruction and skill is what he wants and for every moron that manages to shoot themselves or have a gun turned on them, there are more than just a few people (grannies included) that have managed to take care of themselves quite well with a sidearm when the need arose.

Furthermore, I have yet to hear of the typical low-end burglar that is cocooned in Kevlar outside of a pair that tried to rob a bank in LA a few years back...

I do agree with this; doing a knockoff of a CQB course or the like is much better for you than just plinking silouettes at the range.

Having never personally been in a hairy situation, I have to take the advice of others like yourself; by far and away that advice has been "don't bring a knife to what could turn into a gunfight" and a bastarization of the boy-scout motto, which would run something along the lines of "always be prepared and have the advantage".

There's nothing "John Wayne" about being concerned about your well-being and wanting the ability to defend yourself if necessary; there is something completely "Jackie Chan" about expecting a golf club to save your ass in a pinch...

Desert Eagles of any flavor are range queens unless you are the size of Shaquille O'Niel. Good luck sticking that sucker in a pocket or your waistband...

Again, you don't pull a gun on a person to "scare" them; you pull a gun on someone to end their life. If you aren't willing to do that, then you have no business pulling the gun in the first place.

All I can add is this: If you are going to carry get a freakin' CCW - last thing you want is to end up in jail when it's they criminal's that should be there instead!

Lugging a pistol around by-the-letter-of-the-law without a CCW is pointless. You have to keep the gun in the trunk, locked in a case and the ammo in the glove box. What use is that other than when you are going to a range?

If you get stopped for a traffic infringement and cop catches you with a loaded gun without a CCW you are in a world of sh! t. How's 10 years sound for a gun felony?

That's funny, I thought all those little Israeli policemen carried them all the time.

If they do, they are nuts. I have no clue as to what they carry, but if they have that monster strapped to their side, that's telling me their training has gone completely downhill...

Wikipedia isn't always the best source of information, but out of all of the firearms they list as commonly carried, the Desert Eagle does not come up.

From this website (gotta love Google):

http://www.enemyforces.com/firearms/deserteagle.htm

"Unfortunately the "Desert Eagle" Self-loading Pistol failed to achieve reliability required for a combat pistol. Police forces rejected this pistol of it's too large dimensions, heavy weight and low magazine capacity. Also used by the police forces in an urban area it becomes dangerous for civilians as bullet proofing target has enough energy to hit the other. The same reasons made it unpopular among the special forces. It is an expensive weapon. As a result it's maintenance is also quite expensive."
