after the 3rd break in at our offices saturday, i refuse to stay there late at night without some kind of protection anymore. i just applied today for my gun permit which should be here in 4-6 weeks. in the mean time, i will be shopping around for a decent starter handgun. any suggestions? i'd like to keep the cost relatively low ($400-550 range).

Sig Sauer P226 in 40S&W. Good stopping power on the round, Sig's are amazing which is why they are standard issue for police up here, and you can probably get a used one, or a factory remanufactured one (pulled apart and completely inspected, comes with a huge warranty on all parts, something breaks, send it back and they'll fix it for free) for under $600.

i guess just something that feels good in my hand and shoots well. it won't be a recreational gun, just for personal protection when i am at the office at midnight working. the latest break in has me scared because it was more than 1 person and they knew what they were doing

I would also think about if you are going to want to conceal the gun on your person when you are out. If so, you definatly want a subcompact. 9mm are cheap comparitivly, but a 40 wouldnt be much more. You can buy ammo dirt cheap for the 9mm (Walmart sells 100 rounds for like $10) so you can practice alot which you better be doing no matter what gun you buy! Narrow your wants down a little more and I think you will get more specific answers from the guys on here.
Edit after your last post: If you think these guys know what you are doing, its even more important that you know the gun 150% in and out. Don't get yourself killed trying to defend yourself from someone who just wants in and out of the place and had no intention of being a murderer.

if thats the case, go to a range and shoot a few different guns until you find something that feels good and natural.
personally, i'm a glock fan... but the lack of manual safeties scare some people.

If you're looking for something for protection, maybe a revolver like a Ruger SP101. They look sweet, VERY reliable, it's compact and EASILY concealed and it's a .357. Not expensive at all and perfect for self protection.

Otherwise you can try and find a Hi Point 9mm or .45 They run $155 each. Not the same quality as a HK, Berretta or S&W but stiill pretty good so long as you don't plan on putting 1000's of rounds through it.
