Doesn't matter if he knew the trim level, but the fact that he didn't know it was a Contour is what gets to me.

Is he supposed to keep track of discontinued models that were sold 6 years ago?

The majority of lower level salesmen (such as car sales) bounce around from job to job, they could sell anything. As Todras said, one month it could be washing machines, 3 months later it could be cars. Car sales has an extremely high turnover rate. Most people joke that dealerships have a revolving door in the back for new hires.

The salesmen who know thier ish are either car enthusiasts themselves (very unlikely) or they have been in the car sales business specifically for some time. To be honest, you would be very surprised to find out how little car salesmen know. I found that out last summer first hand. They dont know anything about the cars that the car company doesnt feed them out of a brochure, which means their info and comparisons are based on tricky wording and biased tests. Which I guess means he should have known the HP

Anyway, it doesnt surprise me in the least he didnt know what your contour was. Especially if it wasnt an old SVT dealer.
