My 96 contour atx 124,000 has been ticking loudly lately. It kind of sounds like the marble in a paint can. It will go away slightly upon acceleration, but I can hear it come back as the rpms begin to fall back down.
It did go aleast 8,000 without a oil change, but I recently ran a little berrymans through and changed oil and filter. this helped somewhat but it is still quite noticable.
Does this indicate that a lifter is bad or stuck? what can I do to diagnose this problem as my haynes repair manual doesnt really give me any ideas.

Stick it in your butt and rotate.

What does "join the club" mean? Is that ticking a common problem on tours? Anyways, I had a similar noise that slowly when away upon acceleration and I could not figure out what it was for the life of me. I took it to a shop and it was a slight exhaust leak at the flange after the cat. Easy fix. May not be your problem, but it is a thought.

By slight leak do you mean at a connection, was it a gasket, how did he determine it was leaking.
Does anyone know how to check for a leaking exhaust?
I hope this is an easy fix as well, because my car does not burn oil and only has some minor suspension issues.

I read your link and I do not have an oil problem other thatn it hadn't been changed for many miles. It does not use oil as it was not even a quart low when I changed it.
I was wondering if there is any other suggestions on what it might be or if there is any way to diagnose if it is a lifter.

i noticed tonight that the ticking is barely heard after the engine is warmed up, and it also seems to be quieter when it is in gear as opposed to park.

Does it still sound after you changed the oil?

Yes, it does still make the noise after the oil change. It sounds very similar to a marble in paint can. It quickens with acceleration and gets loud upon decelleration. It does practically disappear after the engine has been up to operating temp but there is still something there.
