Now, I could be totally ass backwards on the subject as to how I have established a good credit rating. In fact a great credit rating. Either paying monthly on my car did it, or as I said, the bank card usage. Regardless, my rating was 3, 1 being best and 6 worst.. iirc. From what I was told, that is pretty damn good for an 18 year old (at the time). I go through Keybank.

Your car loan built your credit. Debit cards have nothing to do with building credit. They're not reported to credit bureaus in that regard because they're not "extending credit" to you since it's your money being spent.

I've already been denied one from chase.

Any ideas?

Try department store cards (I started with Daytons many, many years ago). They are usually more lenient. Or get a family member to co-sign.

I love credit cards but the companies hate me!

I like using their credit to buy things, and then pay it all back before they get MY money <3 no fee cards.

A buddy of mine just got the american express card that saves a portion of your purchases for you. He's like me and puts everything on credit and then pays it down at the end of the month. of course paying for tuition with it covers the yearly fee of 25 bucks. So all that spending is turning into free money, plus the interest on the savings account is decent enough to move some other money over to it!

I should have decent credit for a 20 year old. Pay my cell phone bill on time, pay car insurance, blah blah.

Chase said the reason it was denied because not enough revolving accounts and whatnot.

I'll go with the secured card if I have to but to me, that's no better than having a debit card, or worse since my money is less accessible to me. Of course I'll do it if that's the only way I can build credit.

I got denied all the time. I had no real work history (self employed since i was 16)
But i finally got a Kay Jewelers card when i was buying a necklace for my GF. it was only $300 but it worked.
Then i got approved for a Capital One card. They gave me $200, and now 8 months later its $3000.
Now i get pre-approved for a ton of cards.
I only want one, so i am ditching my household bank card and sticking with Capital One. I have had the HB card for a little less time than the C1 card and they never upped my credit, or dropped my APR its like 25%
The C1 card was 22 and now is 16.
I never make minumum payments, and pay it off when i can afford it.

Def. give Capital One a try.

I heard capital's rates were not all that great....

Also Chase just pisses me off, if you have a high enough balance, and pay off a huge chunk of it they will send you these annoying letters saying "we hope you arent leaving us!"

Hey morons, I wasnt leaving you the first 400 times you sent me the letters, im not now! not yet....

Will applying for cards hurt my credit? Or does it not really matter seeing as I guess it sucks already.

Each time you apply for a card your credit score is checked, and it goes down a little bit.

They are/were giving 5 dollar gift certs at kroger for filling out an app for a master card. I watched this woman come in 4 different days and apply each time (I only assume she used her real name because she didnt appear to be too bright)who knows that other stores she went to in addition.

Most definitely. Each inquiry stands on your credit record for two years. Accumulating enough inquiries in a short period of time will hurt you score.

That's when you use their paranoia against them. Bargain for increased credit limits, reduced APRs, and/or zero fees.
