News is useless information 99% of the time. All it does is poison your outlook on the world. I have had a few hurricanes catch me off guard though... that wasn't cool.
If you were to generate a world outlook based on everything other than news, what kind of outlook would you find? Think about all of the cop dramas, for example. It is true that these are works of fiction but people who only watch these kinds of shows, sans news and real world exposure, internalize the ideas these shows propagate. It's not the news, it's mass media in general that is rather negative. I am going to go out on a ledge here and say that those who say they avoid news are lazy. It's not that you feel that all news media is bad, rather that it takes more than a channel change to find a few sources and a few different views. It is only human nature to be curious about is going on around us and around the world. You say the news media is worthless but keep in mind that is the same media that produces everything else you watch; that which most definitely affects your world view.
