if you're picking and choosing though, how do you know you're getting all the news you need to know? On top of that, how do you know the paper is reporting everything you need to know? What if some news is omitted? How would you know?

edit: Perhaps I should be more specific, TV news stations are pretty much garbage the majority of the time since when they report on idiotic topics there's no way around it besides switching the station. Reading newspapers/online papers is a lot better since you can pick and choose what you want to read about.
Good points! There are a lot of politicians that count on the ignorance of the general public.

Since I study International Relations and Media Communication I feel I need to stay informed. Though I must say that being a news junkie does not make one well informed. News has become a business, its first goal is to make money and not to inform. I get my news from various newspaper, websites, and rarely from TV. No offence to anyone here but I think its ignorant to avoid news. I think society should be well educated and well informed. That does not mean watch CNN/Fox all the time, rather get news from various sources. The idea that there should be a happy news station is not what news is about. Also just because you cannot be 100 percent sure that your news source is giving you everything is not an argument against the news. It is an argument for reading more sources.

I'm sorry, but I feel this is moronic. People such as yourself who don't care, are the reason why idiots are elected and why current trends in our politic system, local and national, are allowed to continue. To keep yourself in a bubble may seem like a good idea at the surface, but in reality it is not. I hope you don't pass that down to your children.

The news was very depressing and sucked to learn all the bad things going on. I just stopped paying attention to the news. I have to tell you now all that matters is my family and what goes on at home. I feel so much better and way less stressed about things i have no control of. Im much happier and the world seems like a way nicer place. Call me what you want but living without worring about all the sh*t going on in the world makes life that much better.
Anyone else avoid the news at all cost?
Matt
I haven't watched the news on TV in probably 3 years. The forecase is usually wrong plus the only news is bad news. The only exposure I have to any news is when I visit forums like this or I go to Yahoo! and stumble upon something that I find interesting. I really just don't give a crap.

i like my local news, normally happy and all that good stuff. Not a huge fan of national news, they just complain about everything. This is bad, that is bad, corruption, incompetence, death, disiese, war. Well, they normally have a blurb of something funny or nice at the end of their shows, like a watersking squirrle or something like that, and they think that will cheer people up.

Sorry, I should have been even MORE specific. I meant to say weed out the unimportant topics such as "man hit by train", "gas prices go higher!!!OMG" and "crackwhores on the rise in del boca vista".
How do I know the paper which is reporting is 100% accurate? I don't, that's why I don't believe everything I read

I haven't read a newspaper or watched news on TV for years. The only TV I watch is Adult Swim, some stuff on Discovery, Spike, Comedy Central, etc.
News is useless information 99% of the time. All it does is poison your outlook on the world. I have had a few hurricanes catch me off guard though... that wasn't cool.

I hit specific web-based news sites (BBC, Al-Jazeera, CNN, MSNBC, FOX and a few others); past that I tune in to a few TV-based news programs on PBS, Bloomberg and MSNBC, but that's it for the most part...
It takes 3 seconds of a local news program to have me ready to take a golf-club to the TV, due to the content being about as intelligent and meaningful as bathroom stall graffitti. It's been over a decade since I've sat through a local news program.
