It's amazing how many people have been stationd at (or rotated through) ole Ft. Hungry Lizard...we have been BRAC'd twice and only lost barrack space (490,000 sq. ft.) so far....

No, the Army isn't involved with the dunes clean-up, but I was one of the consultants brought in to make recommendations on restoration techniques. I was also involved in the Ft. Ord clean-up and restoration effort. As long as someones out there rippin' and shreddin'...I'll have a job! laugh

For the unfamiliar, BRAC is short for Base Realignment and Closure (?) that Congress has been fighting over the past many years. Congressmen don't want bases to close cuz it means lost jobs. The Pentagon would like to close bases to save money.

I imagine that the barracks closings you mention have been torn down wooden WWII building. My dad even went through basic training at Camp Roberts and was on a boat enroute to the war when the Japanese surrendered.

They have nearly finished tearing down all the old wooden building at Ft Rucker. None of my old work places are still standing and they have all been replaced with new brick buildings so Ft Rucker appears safe from BRAC. All the asbestos in those old building is an environmental nightmare. They are hard to tear down too because they were built pretty rugged in the old days with diagonal slatting and 2X6 construction. They even salvage a lot of the old wood because it is still in great shape years later.

Gotta go to work. I've started working part time (10 hours a week) for a contractor supporting Ft Rucker and hopefully it will lead to more hours down the line. Gotta make it fit with my video store hours, and I have a buyer who may work out and if he doesn't I'll continue doing both.
