Rock chips will usually look like this. I repaired these the other day on an X5. The black you're seeing is air inside the break, which is not good.
And for reference, here is the first after I repaired it. I couldn't get a good picture of the second, sorry.
If it's a nick, it should appear white, almost like a bird poo splatter. There should be no black or clear lines associated with it.
