That analogy makes absolutely no sense. Your production is measured by what you do at work. My production is not measured by these lectures but by the test scores. You get PAID for work, I have to PAY the university.

On top of that, to those who say just go to class and don't read the book...the problems with that solution are:

1. Professor doesn't cover everything in class, just selected topics. So reading is necessary anyway.

2. The book is much clearer than my professor (for reasons too extensive to list here).

All in all, it seems like I'm making a mountain out of mole hill. It's mostly the principle of confronting a situation that is inefficient and illogical.

Not to mention, I've become aware over the years why our country performs terribly in the worldwide category of education...

And I don't know how Stazi does it, but he can take the most random topic and somehow conjure up a story about sweater puppets and/or pink tacos.

I don't think many people in the administration (Deans, Department chairs and the like) will offer much help. I had teachers where you could just hold the book in class and watch them lecture about it, with no real notes or value added information. I even failed a class undergrad despite getting A's and B's on all the tests and papers because I missed to many classes. Conversely, I also managed to get a B in a class I only went to on the first day, and for the tests (no attendance policy in that one). Don't know what else to tell you other than that it seems to be a fact of (college) life.

Okay. That's nothing.

Thank God I never had this calculus professor at my school (though some of my friends have). On top of being clinically insane, he used to have "all or nothing" tests, where if you got one point off you got a zero. Some student reactions, straight from www.ratemyprofessors.com:
Quote:

"Tricky Lui" - Intentionally put an incorrect hint on the board for a test to trap the students. 80% of the class used it...thinking that the professor was trying to teach them. I guess he was. He laughed when he told the class that if you used the hint, you were wrong...because he is "Tricky Lui"

Quote:

Ridiculously difficult to understand and learn from. Anyone who gets that much pleasure from failing students should not be teaching, and you know something's wrong when 79% of a class fails and the administration has to "step in" and change grades.

Evil teacher. Makes fun of questions. Recieves complaint emails and proudly forwards them to the class mailing list. Introduces new material for final during an "optional" review session the night before. Avoid at all costs!

I've gleened from the posts that you're a senior, but you don't state what class this is. If it's a 100 level core class, eff it. If it's a 500 level class, it's pretty much up to YOU to learn ON YOUR OWN at that point. Somewhere in between, you MIGHT have a case.

I think one thing to clarify is what level of class this is, and where it lies in the path of that department. I have far different expectations of an introductory class or especially of a class not part of the major curriculum than a more advanced class.

Also, is the professor tenured? If so, you're pretty much SOL.

Honestly, if all the professor is doing is rereading the book without expanding and clarifying the material, bring it up to the department chair and let it be know on your course assessment. This is really too minor of an issue for the dean's office.
