they are kind of hard to find though - only seen them in a store once, but you can get em online http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-manufacturer/grado/grado-sr-60.php
For a portable (even though its mainly for in house use and occasionally car rides) wouldnt a closed design be better?
i've heard good things about the Sennheiser HD 280 PRO... but they are slightly out of my limit. they sell for $100
better you mean for sound quality? or durability, or just not sharing your music with your neighbors?
sound quality is really really good. your neighbors definitely can hear the music though.
now officially a troll, i guess. used to have a black 96 SE, until it broke down one too many times.
now I'm hunting for a motorycle.

SR60s have to be near the top of any list of budget headphones. They get universal praise by anyone who has listened to them. That being said, if I were in your position, I would listen to some Sennheiser HD201s. About 6 months ago, I heard some and was floored by their performance. They are not HD580 or HD600 good, but IMO, they are VERY close in performance to the SR60s but can be had for 20-25.00. I would buy them and set a 100.00 aside for a future headphone amp purchase.
Another way to go but its a bit out of your current price range is some in-ear monitors like Etymotics ER-6, Shure E2C, and the Ultimate Ears Super.Fi 3. Ety's absolutely own the mid-high end portion this market, but Shures have put themselves in a position to be competitive and the E4C being particularly good but way out of your price range. The E2C compromises a bit of midrange "openness" for lack of a better term, but is good. Under 100.00, the Super.fi 3 is my choice.
I don't have a lot of experience with Sony cans, but have heard everything from glowing reviews to awful reviews of just about everyone of their high end models. I tend to believe the glowing reviews more than the trash ones based on opinions from those people I trust.
As a side note, if you are into rap, rock, or other in your face styles of music, the AKG K 26 P is cheap, sounds pretty good, and has outstanding bass response.

Sennhieser PX100. Just try them; you will be impressed. For the price, you'll be blown away.

I've got some of the Etymotic ER-6i's, and I love them. Can easily find them for under $100 too.

ok I am another than must sing the praises of Grado
I've been using their SR80's for about 6 months now.... absolutely love them. Everyone I work with uses the Sennheisers... I've tried them, and I'm just not crazy about them.
I guess it all depends what you are plugging them into.
I'm probably one of the few people that actually has a full rack mounted pre-amp/eq at work just for their headphones.
just my 2 cents but avoid Bose, if only they dumped as much money on R&D as they did with their advertising, then maybe they would have a decent product.

Normally, i would never disagree with this assertation about Bose, but in this case, they do make some respectable sounding headphones. Overpriced, but competent enough to be discussed with other products on the list.
What kind of Sennheisers have you listened to at work and what kind of equipment is in the stack?

ya, I was kinda stereotyping bose, just because its a name you reconize, doesnt mean its truely a quality product.
Sennheisers - the HD515 and the HD555 [and I'm not sure what the other guys model# is].... theirs nothing wrong with them, they are good sounding headphones, but they just dont suite my sound tastes [and personally I am very sensitive to the "bulkyness" of wearing them]
My work audio equipment is a tivoli model one radio, Nikko pre-amp Beta50 and a Nikko EQ25... no speakers, just my Grado SR80 headphones

Okay i've been reading and i've come up with a few more questions... Is a closed or open back design better? 80% of the time it wont be in a noisy environment with much background noise but sometimes it will... i like the design of the closed ones personally... After looking through headphones i like the AKG K 26 P, and the Sennheiser HD 201. someone mentioned a headphone amp... well after reading a bit i find myself intrigued with the Cmoy diy amps... i may take a crack at building one of these in an altoids tin for those that dont know what i'm talking about they are 9V battery powered headphone amps

i'm a college student. i dont have much money. why pay $100 for an amp that i dont really need when i could build one for $30-40?
plus it'd be an interesting thing to try and build.
