What is a good set of headphones to buy? I'm looking for something that sounds good unpowered through an Mp3 player or computer (but the majority will be my Creative Mp3 player). I consider myself a bit of an audiophile so i would want something good. When getting into the higher end headphones, i dont know what sounds good and what needs to be powered. budget is a concern, i think that $75 is about the highest i'd go... (but higher suggestions will be taken into consideration). I have the lowest end set of Sony Studio Monitor headphones (MDR-V150) and i hate them. They're not impressive at all.

I agree that the MDR-150s are not great. The MDR-300 are the same style except they have a different magnet (much better sound quality, although they tend to be heavy on the bass) and softer cushions. For $30-40 they are my choice pair (I've owned two so far) but since your budget is even higher there are probably other choices out there too.

My friend has those, very nice. The noise-canceling factor of the headphones really work. I was impressed with the headphones.

they are kind of hard to find though - only seen them in a store once, but you can get em online http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-manufacturer/grado/grado-sr-60.php
For a portable (even though its mainly for in house use and occasionally car rides) wouldnt a closed design be better?
i've heard good things about the Sennheiser HD 280 PRO... but they are slightly out of my limit. they sell for $100

The best headphones that I've owned are the Sony MDR-V6.

Amazing; those are the EXACT set of studio monitors I've had since high-school. I absolutely love them and they still see constant use...
I have a set of Sennheiser HD590's that I bought about 2 years ago and paid 2-3x more for than the Sony V6's I have; they are good but they simply do not sound anywhere near as good as the V6's. I've been told that the HD590's typically need a LONG burn-in period before they start to deliver good sound. I'm not entirely sure about that, but I do know that they sounded like junk to my ears the first day I put them and 2 years of infrequent use has made them sound quite a bit better...
I guess it also depends on what device is driving them; I get completely different listening experiences on difference pieces of equipment.
For the money, I'll put my vote towards the Sony V6's.
