So I'm paying $1/G extra from where I was 2+yrs ago. Average fill up costs me $13 more.
Each tank = 300miles
Yearly Driving Average = 12,000 miles
12,0000/300 = 40 fill-ups equals an exta $43/month or $520/yr.
I'm not going to change my lifestyle for $500/yr
I just did that with my current driving situation. I am paying an extra $1700(ish) more a year because of gas. I sold the car I recently bought because it dawned on me, sure this is a nice car but the cost of PAYING for he vehicle outways any gas milage increase I would see and it wasn't as fun to drive. I only work 22 hours/week at $13.10/ hour...so do the math on that and that $1700 isn't making me change my driving habits either.

I might take the bus more. That's about it.
I look at it this way: say gas goes up 10 cents/litre (all figures Cdn$). The tank is 50 litres. That's $5 per tank. Given that I don't drive all that much, it works out to $15/month. I think I can swing that.
Even then, with my late father's Country Squire (351 carbueted, baby!), I am looking at $7.20 per tank difference. Add another $15 per month, if I am generous as to how much I would drive the wagon.
I don't want to make the same mistake a neigbour did. He sold his Bronco because of the price of gas, and he loved that vehicle. Got $5000 for it. Then he bought a newer Explorer. For the price difference, he could have bought a LOT of gas.
Yes, I get sticker shock at the gas price, same as everyone else. But I won't spend $5000 to feel better about the price I pay for gas.

Nothing.
Cost of fuel ain't that big a deal. I won't be concerned about it until it approaches the price of fuel in europe.
Side note: I just bought into a townhouse project that is 5 minutes from my work (less than 2 miles) & I'll be moving into one of the units mid to late 2007. Living that close I could bike to work without much fuss.
Right now I commute 20 miles each way so not only will there be fuel cost savings, but the insurance premiums will go WAAAAAY down.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I have a few other projects in the works so I'm going to see those through to completion first. But mpg is definitely a factor worth considering for my next car.
I'm still in the breakin stage for the GTO, but so far after 500 miles; I am averaging 23mpg with a 100 mile round trip mixed driving commute that includes ALOT of stationary time on the freeway (LA traffic). My SVT averaged between 25.5 and 26.7 mpg depending on which route I would take during the week.
I doubt I'll get beck to those same numbers, however I expect to get close to them. If I get a 24 mpg average I'll be happy.

And you guys cant complain, it costs me 48 bucks to fill up the SVT when premuim is 1.09/Liter
that isn't bad, costs well over $80 to fill up the truck for me. And that is american $$$$
You guys don't know anything.
Our Suburban costs nearly $120 to fill up. My Ranger just cost me $40 today!
Of course, we're not some poser who only has a Suburban because of the hype. We actually use 80-90% of the seating at all times!
Then buy a minivan dumbass.

My one-ton truck was my daily driver until the last gas spike. At $3/gal it was just under $100/tank (up from $60 or so @ $2/gal), and needed 1 tank/week. So $400/mo was just TOO expensive! I re-insured the Contour (which was seeing maybe 1000 miles/year). There's no way around driving the truck as it's my business vehicle, but now I can generally make 2 weeks between fill-ups. So the $150 or so in savings per month more than makes up for the cost of insuring and driving the Contour again.
Your truck cost you $400/month to run every day. Cutting that in half by using the Contour cuts that to $200/month. The only way you're saving $150/month by using the COntour is if it's only costing you $50/month to fuel and insure it. And I really doubt that's the case.
Doing some quick, rough math if you were using 30 gallons a week in the truck then you were probably driving about 450 miles a week. Which would take a Contour about 18 gallons to go -- or about $54/week.
If driving the truck costs $100/week, and the Contour costs $54/week and you drive 2 weeks a month in each of them, then your total cost is $308 per month. That's a savings of only $92/month over driving the truck every day. Figure in the added insurance costs to drive the Contour, and you're probably only really saving $40/month or so not $150.
I'm not saying that's exactly your case. You might drive more in the Contour than a 50/50 mix. I'm just using your case as an example of how even at $3/gallon, the cost savings of driving a considerably more fuel-efficient vehicle generally aren't that great. Particularly when considering what benefits you might give up when doing so (like not being able to visit a job-site easily because it's a day you drove your little car instead of your truck).

Selling my truck this summer... 9 MPG with no wieght, 7-8 MPG towing just isn't gonna cut it. My Shadow still gets around 30 MPG granny-shifting, so I'll stick with that and add a contour in place of the truck Hopefully all this will help

Well, I will try to be smarter with my driving and schedule my errands more efficiently. Overall, though, it's a matter of just accepting it. I'm not going to get paranoid just because the commodities traders are.

I'm not gonna do anything. Maybe if I'm going on a trip with others and my car isn't needed, then I won't take it. I'll probably get a motorcycle by the end of the year, just because I want one, the good gas mileage will be a plus.
