Actually now they say 10-2 isn't the safest as the airbag will possibly blow your hands off the steering wheel and into the ceiling. 9-3 is the safer position. This is something I read a while back so I don't know if it is true.
When my airbag went off in my Zetec, it sounded like someone shooting me in the face with a shotgun and then scraping that rough fabric all over my face. It hurt a little, but I would imagine w/o it, it would have hurt a lot more!
