The rod really matters when welding. a brazing rod with flux is the best , but welding exhaust you could use a coat hanger it just depends how good the steel is, if not just get some oxy welding rod. i dont really pull the torch away when brazing but it depends on what your welding. Also make sure you have a neutral flame if its oxidizing its way to hott and will melt through. i just went though welding and am getting certified soon.
