okay, maybe I wasn't specific enough on yesterdays posts so I'll try again. I've got a 95 contour, 150,000 km, new wires,plugs,O2 sensor, MAF sensor, tps 1 yr old.Whenver it rains it goes into self test mode. When I start the engine the cel will only flash for a half second ( compared to staying on until the engine actually starts),rad fan comes on, idle speed is high and then it gives me codes ( saying that this or that wasn't done during test ie throttle not depressed etc) it will continue to give me these codes via the cel. If I pull it in gear ( its a automatic) it will stall so its a bit tricky. It also seems to be lacking power. Also, while snooping around I keep on hearing this hissing noise from under the battery tray. Hey guys, any ideas.

well that makes no sense, the self test to pull codes needs a jumper at the connectors, check that they are in good shape

I see it being one of two other things, the cel flashes upon a misfire

or your drive belt is slipping because it is getting wet, does your 95 have the upgraded for 95/aditional fender liner that closes in the crank area in the wheel well? if not when you hit a puddle it will cause the belt to slip because it gets wet, although you would loose everything and the steering would get still, the battery light as well as just about every other light on the dash would come on

From your description, it is clear that the PCM is in self-test mode (STM). I will assume that you didn't leave a jumper installed in the self-test plug.

To enter STM, the Self Test Input (STI) lead (that's the small, single wire plug) is connected to the Signal Return line in the EEC Test connector. Connecting this signal line to chassis ground will produce the same effect.

I'd suspect either your STI signal is shorted to ground or your PCM is internally defective.

With power off, check the STI lead for a short to ground or low resistance. If it is low or shorted, unplug the PCM and retest to see if the short is in the harness or the PCM.

Inspect your wiring harnes for bad insulation.

Yes, I have checked the plug in connector for the tester, peeled back some tape.Everything looked good, retaped and secured. There is however right next to the tester plug anoth two pin female connector, don't know what it is but it is pointing straight up so I put some vasoline over it to keep the moisture out of it. As for the drive belt I have noticed lately that it does squeal when it gets wet, never did it before though. Steering gets tight, no lights though, slight dimming of headlights. About the only time that it goes in self test is when first started.Could the drive belt or something in that area be causing it?

Thanks, I went and checked that wire to ground and nothing, however my dvm only goes to 400 ohms. I think I failed to mention that I allready tried a different pcm and nothing. Other than belt slippage I'm really suspecting wiring harness trouble. But still, whats up with this whistling noise coming from under the battery tray, can it be coming from the transmission?

okay, so I pulled the single wire by itself out of the wiring harness as far as the large block connector located next to the air filter housing. All seemed ok but it no longer goes into stm. I opened this plug and it seems ok. I bought a can of spray for the wires and sprayed them down. I also tested this wire to ground and nothing. The other wire you referred to ( signal wire ), is there any way to check it, it seems to go to the fuse/relay box.
