I think that is a really good idea as another side of their story. Show both sides. That would make it a more fair and complete story. I think that we might be surprised at how well treated the American would be unless he was purposely baiting them. Or if he was unlucky enough to run into some of the extremist wackos.
I don't think going to a NASCAR race is a bad idea for a story like this, as long as they are going other places. They need to go to a Country club, malls and downtown in a big city, + others, to check the reactions of different demographics. They will need to do it scientifically and spend the same amount of time doing the same things in the same costumes, etc.
It would also make a difference how they do it. What sort of costume will their actors be wearing? A couple of younger guys acting all crazy with wires poking from beneath a long coat? Or a family...
If it was done in a fair way, I would be interested in this story.

i hate stereotypes, period. and i really hate the one associated with NASCAR. it is not about hicks, nor was it started by hicks. It was a bunch of good ol boys running shine that wanted a legal way to race. hicks dont care if what they do is legal or not. so like most stereotypes, its wrong.

At times, it seems like some people try to put down nascar to make themselves feel like bigger people.
Anyways, the dateline thing is bs. They could have gone to concerts, baseball games, etc. They targeted nascar because everyone thinks nascar is a buncha hicks. They're probably sending somebody in wearing some crazy durka durka clothes. Of course they're gonna get some reaction. Send in an average american muslim and just have him watch the race with some buddies/family, and I bet noone will even notice.

excuse me? no talent? so much money? the highest spending NASCAR team spends about a third as much money as an F1 or an Indy team. and the cars are so close, that it really comes down to who is the best driver/team as to who wins a race. not the money they spend. although it does have an effect on it, as it does in all forms of racing
if theres no talent needed, id like to see you try and do it.

Yes I'm sure good ol boys runnin' shine(which was illegal) were worried about racing legally.

I'm sorry you missed the sarcasm in that post. And IMO, the only reason F1 has so much money in the cars is because its heavily backed by the manufacters, I'd argue quite a bit more than NASCAR. NASCAR > F1 in following and popularity in the US.

Back on the journalism topic, I recall seeing this thing on Univision (Spanish) about a Mexican man getting on a plane and booted off for looking Arab. Trust me, he really looked it.
I too have seen stereotypes in action. I got on a plane from LA to Ft. Lauderdale, overbooked (procedure) but everyone came. The flight attendants were asking for someone to volunteer their seat, and as soon as a Muslim man (dressed in white, probably headed for the Hajj in Mecca) came in the plane, about ten people got off (coincidentally, all white. No other race or ethnicity).
