Remington 597 LSS in a .22L is my only rimfire. It's simple, cheap and fun.

For accuracy, authority and range, I have other items.

I used to own a 10/22, and I would get one again. Lots of goodies out there for them.....

The only other rimfire I ever really loved was this 70+ year old single-shot bolt-action Winchester (I think it was a Winchester). It took two separate motions to ready it to fire (cycle bolt, then cock hammer), but the trigger was so smooth and soft that you couldn't even pull off-target, and the barrel was nice and long. Great parallax. You'd constantly surprise yourself with how well you could bean targets with just iron sights.

There are a whole bunch of barrels/stocks/finishes to choose from now, too.

Challenge: can you get through 550 rds in one afternoon, and can you resists the huge, cheap aftermarket for the gun? So far I've done both.

I have one and I think it's a pretty good rifle. Aftermarket is great and the cost of using it is minimal. I've been modding mine but it's not done yet. If I remember, I'll post some pics later.

I heard someone mention an AR7 earlier.. That has to be the crappiest gun I've ever shot/owned. It's jammed since the day I got it and continues to jam every time you shoot more than 1 clip.

I also have a Ruger 10/22 and it's probably the best gun I've ever shot. I've never had a problem with it jamming and theres lots of add-ons for it. I'd definetly look into a Ruger, You won't be sorry.

That was me. Had no problems with mine & I've owned it for almost 30 years now. The sights do take some getting used to, but once I mastered that, I could do very well with it. The thing I liked most; it would take some serious abuse when on a canoe trip in the wilderness of northern Maine & still function just fine. Relatively few parts to jam up, coated with some kind of plastic paint so it will never rust, & best of all - IT FLOATS! It was built as a survival weapon - pack it away & take it out only if you NEED it (Gotta take your time lining up the goofy sights though). Seems to fit that bill adequately, though there are certainly better guns out there.

My brother also owned a Ruger 10/22, and I have to say I liked that gun much better, although you HAD to carry it. You couldn't pack it away like I could the AR7. Ruger 10/22 had the cool rotary clip, very accurate, reliable. I never thought about it except when we would go shooting or sup'm, so I've never explored the aftermarket for it. Frankly, I'm surprised there is such a great abundance of options for it.

I'm outa touch when it comes to rimfires, I guess.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Maybe I got a defective model. I didn't pay much attention since it was a hand down from my uncle.

I love how everyone has been talking about the 10/22.

It is a great gun no doubt - BUT
Its universally known to not be that nice of a gun right out of the box. Upgrades are super easy to find but things like quality barrells cost you an arm and a leg.

A 10/22 with a nice trigger, extractor, stock, barrell is going to run $600 +++++++

The R22 looks better and better every day.
uses proven Ruger action (mags fit too)
used AR15 trigger group and pistol grip
H&K G3 butt stock
Full length mount rail
Custom Barrells . .
