But you want to spend anther $500 to buy a rifle just so you can shoot .22's?

That $500 you could put towards that $320 M39 Finnish-beauty (that you've been lusting after) and the other $180 would buy you about 2500 rnds of 54R (from Sportman's Guide).

Another option is to buy a nice Russian Capture K98 ($200), or a Yugo M48 (or 24/47)($150) and then with $200 you could buy 1000rnds of 54R and 1000rnds of 8x56 - THEN you'd have rifles from both sides of the Volga!

I agree with Stazi on this one. Aint no way in hell Ill pay that much for a .22 plinker. $250 is my cap for what Im looking for. Id be happier to pick up a nice used one from the local gun shop down in the $100-200 range (no idea what they go for used, however).

well - I pulled the proverbial trigger today - and after a 35 min conversation with the Owner/Designer of the R22 I ordered one.

Ill post pics when I get it.

Stazi - I love my mosin - I just cant see the need for another one right now. My roomate has an M44 and eventually ill buy an M39 and some sort of carbine (91/59??) but not for now.

Ruger is the way to go. I have shot the 10/22 many times and love it. I own the Remington 597 .22 LR and I hate it so much that I don't ever shoot it anymore. Anyone wanna buy it? It jams all the time since the day I bought it. I sent it back to the factory and they said it was fixed... I shot it and the second shot jammed. Jams ever since... Anyone still wanna buy my 597 ??? Anyways, I don't mean to bash Remington, because I love them, own them, and they really do make good guns. I guess the 597 is just a little to cheap at the price of just over $100 bucks. I guess you get what you pay for. Heck, my pellet gun cost twice as much as my Remington .22!

A 10/22 with a nice trigger, extractor, stock, barrell is going to run $600 +++++++

The R22 looks better and better every day.
uses proven Ruger action (mags fit too)
used AR15 trigger group and pistol grip
H&K G3 butt stock
Full length mount rail
Custom Barrells . .

No way; trigger/action work is all a 10/22 really needs for relatively solid accuracy and that shouldn't run more than $150-200 extra at most.

The stock barrel holds up fairly well at moderate distances; I used to be able to split cattails 50 yards using iron-sights on my 10/22 that only had the above done to it.

Hence my second option - get a mauser. Both my K98 and my M24/47 are accurate and cheap as hell to shoot. Not as cheap as a 22, but who want's to shoot a cap-gun anyway. I sold my 22 Mossberg cos it was no fun.

But I'll tell you the most fun gun I have - my SKS. Cheap ($100-150), accurate, dependable and cool looking. You can even mod the hell out of them if you so please. All I did to mine was add a recoil buffer, a proper muzzle brake instead of the stupid grenade launcher, and a POSP scope.

My AK is super fun to shoot, but the accuracy isn't as good.

you say no way - but you just added 100% to the cost of the gun. $200 for the 10/22 and another $200 for trigger work? you are already over the cost of an R22 with AR triggersets.

Stazi - I actually plan on buying a mauser for my next mil surplus. I want to find a spanish 7.62 NATO mauser - family being from spain and all. im not an AK person in the least, but I DID heavily look at SKS's before I got my Ex-PU

The 7.62 NATO Mausers aren't cheap. I'll keep an eye out for yu though. I recommend you get you C&R ($30) that way you can buy what you want without the BS of going through a dealer.
