not sure if this will be of any assistance... but i also seem to have the same type of whine you are explaining (i think)
mine sounds almost like a turbo spooling up though
quieter than youd expect a turbo to be of course. but the same type of noise none-the-less.
could be my hearing throwing me off.. but sometimes i seem to think its coming from the rear seat direction.. next time i drive i'll turn my stereo off to make sure it is not the amp/subs or something like that (wasnt audible when stereo was turned down..haven't tried off yet)
