So....i have read up on moosing, and i have read the random threads about engine whining. And I haven't come across one like this. I'm sure it exists though. I have a 98 SVTC with just under 100K. When I am in the drivers seat and it's idling at 750rpm, i cannot hear this whine, but between 750rpm and around 1500 it's quite loud and pronounced, and increases in pitch according with RPM, after 1500, perhaps the whine intensity remains the same, but the sound is drowned out by the engine/intake growl. I did some "troubleshooting" (note the quotes), and i found that from the outside, with the hood closed, you really can't hear it at all, with the hood open, it's there a little more, but not enough to pinpoint where it's coming from. But in the cabin, it's quite loud, all the time. it's definitly not the stereo interference, and it doesnt' quite sound like the "foghorn" that moosing is (so says the FAQ), i don't think it's the tranny, since it makes the noise regardless of being in gear or not. drivability doesn't seem to be affected, but then again, i don't have another svt to compare to. could this be the power steering pump after a serpentine belt replacement? for some reason i though that you would only hear the PS pump when you're actually turning the wheel. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

PS pump would be more of a moaning sound... check PS fluid level and top off as needed.
Perhaps a vacuum leak that you are hearing?

if i had a vacuum leak, would i also have rough/non-existant idle, or driveability problems? i'll check the PS fluid today when i get back from work. Thanks!

Did you turn off the radio to determine this? As in, was the sound still there when the radio was turned off?

not sure if this will be of any assistance... but i also seem to have the same type of whine you are explaining (i think) mine sounds almost like a turbo spooling up though quieter than youd expect a turbo to be of course. but the same type of noise none-the-less. could be my hearing throwing me off.. but sometimes i seem to think its coming from the rear seat direction.. next time i drive i'll turn my stereo off to make sure it is not the amp/subs or something like that (wasnt audible when stereo was turned down..haven't tried off yet)

I checked the PS steering fluid today, it was a tad bit below min, so i topped it off, whining noise still there. i need to get the suspension done, maybe i'll replace the alternator at the same time (i did notice a bit of dimming of interior lights when the headlamps are on, and the turn signals are going). It's not from the rear seat for sure, it's much louder from the front than the rear. But i still cannot hear it very much from the outside, can anyone who has had a failing alternator whine, tell me if they can hear it from the outside too? Thanks for all the suggestions! The days are ful of car stuff, just had to change the battery on my gf's BMW 745i yesterday evening.

Your GF has a 745i, . It looks like your cars will keep you busy, too.
