Did you fit a piece of straight pipe through the cat? I think that the empty chamber will cause some flow problems in the exhaust.

Actually the "Mystery Mod" is gutting the pre-cats.

Gutting the main cat is bad for performance.

Would removing the main cat on a 96 Zetec be bad for performance?

As I recall (which leaves me wide open to admit I'm wrong later... wink ) this was true of cars where the main cat had been replaced by straight pipe. Someone found that the expansion chamber at that location was a good thing for scavenging, or some such. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, here.

Sorry, but having a big chamber in the middle of your exhaust pipe is not good for scavaging.
It is good for causing lots of turbulence and slowing down the flow of exhaust gasses though.

The theory you are refering to is talking about the pre-cats being empty. (Again the "Mystery Mod" vs gutting the main cat)

If you must remove the cat. Put a patch piece of pipe in. Do not just gut it.
