Not strictly true.
There are no significant measured gains from gutting pre-cats as far as I have seen. I have also done the mod on 2 V-6 Contiques. The only time I have observed a percievable gain is when the pre-cats are clogged and/or falling appart anyway & getting fouled. If your pre-cats are failing, it is a good free mod to get your car running properly again, but you'll need mil eliminators. If they're not failing, leave them alone.
For a gain in performance, get MSDS headers.
Free!?!?!? FREE?!?!?!?!??! This is not a free mod! After the spending the time trying to get the bolts off and spraying them down and using heat...you break a lot of things around the house to vent....and that costs money
pb blaster over night.. works wonders and takes away the stress
