The steeda shifter doesn't just reduce the length of the shaft. It also lengthens the shaft below the big middle joint. This reduces the distance the shift knob has to travel no matter how long the shaft is.

Drive any car with a short throw shifter and you'll have the stock shifter. I drove one afer I got my short shifter in my WRX and it felt like I had to move the lever to the next county to change gears.
