Another vote for the Thinkpad here. I've known far too many people who have had Dells (with problems) to reccomend them to anyone.

Another consideration: do you really need a notebook? If you can get away with a desktop, you can save a huge amount of money. Notebooks are cool, but they're much less reliable, and cost way more as well.
