Marketing degrees are like marketing reports - you can make then say what you want. MSU is a known and respected school for both marketing and advertising. The one good thing about a communications degree is it doesn't pigeon hole you. The one bad thing about a communications degree is it isn't focused.

IMO, the real intent of a communications degree is a simpler, faster way to get to an advanced degree.

* blows own horn here - yesterday, I got called (finally) to interview for the MSU Executive MBA program. Yee HA. I wonder if I can afford to blow off family, friends, life and struggle at work for 2 years? Oh, and then there's the cash thing. You know automotive companies are doing so well right now; the cash available for enrichment is just flowing freely....

Some unsolicited advice here, so take it for what it's worth:

Double-major or at least have a STRONG minor if you choose marketing or advertising. If you have a marketing/advertising major coupled with a finance/accounting minor, you are head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd when talking to most companies. They want creative people, but they also want creative people that have some business sense about them.

I didn't do this and I somewhat regret it as I'm now probably stuck going for a masters before I'm allowed "top floor" access in the company I currently work for. My history and philosophy minors have served me well, but they are a bit out of place for an MIS major...

Furthermore, break your neck to get internships or OJT in your field if you aren't going to school year-round. When you do make it to a university or fully-accredited college, find out about exchange programs and try to do at least one during your undergrad. The program I went through at the Sorbonne and Blaise Pascal/UTEP in France has gotten my resume into doors that it had no business entering many times and typically garners more interest than anything else I did during my college years.

Just my .02 cents...Good luck.

Ground Control to Major Todd,
Ground Control to Major Todd,
Fake your driving skills and put your helmet on,

Ground control to Major Todd,
Commencing breakdown engine's gone,
Check ignition and your vacuum hoses too

This is Ground Control to Major Todd
Youve really made the grade
Got yourself to GV State,
close to home 'cuz you were scared
Now its time to leave the westside if you dare

ââ?¬Å?This is Major Todd to Ground Control
Im stepping through the floor
And my 3 liter is smoking in a most peculiar way
And the cars look very different today

From here
Am I shitting in a tin can
Far above my home
and my gay three liter's blown
And theres nothing I can do

Though Im past one hundred thousand swaps
Im feeling very ill
And my pre98 knows which way to SHO
Tell Stazi I love him very much (he knows!)

Ground Control to Major Todd
Your motors dead, theres something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Todd?
Communications Major, Todd?
Communications Major, Todd?
Can you hear....

I go to GVSU Biz... From what I have seen of Marketing majors, they don't seem to be the brightest of folks. It is a great school though...

I've got a Marketing and Management degree and an entreprenuership degree as well. As long as you are willing to work hard you can go far. Remember you cant start at the top. I would advise you to get some sale experience now. The best to get and easy to get is cell phone sales. If you need any help PM any time.
