Beat me to it... more or less the perfect start to an auto-x and/or track project... plus old ones are still cheap

strip it out, put in some nice seats with 5 point belts, roll cage, sticky tires and you are good to go!

... i have yet to be at a auto-x/track day and NOT seen AT LEAST ONE miata (for some reason they are generally driven by instructors in my experience)

Miata-yada-yada.

E30 318s are cheap, capable (for autox), and have more space if you need a little practicality.

Cheap Miata gets my vote. I had a '96 and the purity of the driving experience cannot be explained. It makes my E46 BMW feel ordinary in comparison. Not the fastest in a straight line but when the line curves the Miata doesn't need to slow down They're cheap to buy, cheap to insure, and cheap and easy to maintain. AFAIK you can still get discounted go-fast parts through MazdaComp if you auto-x it a few times per year. If you want to go fast in a straight line turbo is always an option, either home brew of one of several very well sorted kits that'll net you reliable, daily-driverable 250+ wheel horsepower.

i have also considered the same thing. have thought about miatas before. i like the newer ones (2nd gen?) better than the originals but it seems those were more popular for enthusiasts. what do you guys think? is there just as much support for the 2nd gens?

Hah! I'll take an MGB over a Miata anyday! You can find EVERYTHING for the MGB.

My dad owned an MGB in the 1980s and I believe he likes the Miata more (if anything, in terms of reliability; the Miata's never broken down). The MGB was nothing but trouble and didn't run far more often than it did. That's not to say I wouldn't get my hands on one if I knew it had been a good car; they are gorgeous.

having had 2 MGBs, i can safely say...i like my Miata WAY better. it's a better driving experience with none of the reliability issues.

and you can get just as many parts for Miatas as you can for MGBs.

The prices for Miata parts on that site are like Contour-sized I thought they would've been cheaper than that....
