You can use a pot or resistors but you need the specs. No need for power, just turn the key on and put the resistors across the pins the sender is tied to on the harness plug.

I can't seem to find any resistance specs, does anyone here have any info on that?

Also, I tried taking the back seat out, but it felt like I was breaking something. What's the proper technique, just pull like hell?

Push the front of the seat rearwards while pulling up firmly. It will pop loose.

Alternately ground and open the sender signal line and look for a change in the guage.
