...probe was free...and i wouldnt call it a upgrade...i wouldnt call it unreliable...as it has close to 2ook on the original motor and tranny...and it took me from phils to home without a problem....i cant say the same for the contour,i cant remember the last four plus hour trip i took were i didnt have sometype of problem in the tour....and the probe is a downgrade from the tour in every aspect but straightline acceleration

You're partially right. I budget a small amount for regular maintenance and leave a general budget cushion for unexpected things - household, car, etc....

Although, outside of regular oil changes, my scheduled maintenance unfortunately gets put off most of the time... Combine my busy schedule with my tight wadded self and it's just the right formula for auto-procrastination. You see, I'm too cheap to pay someone to do the maintenance but I'm too busy to do it myself...

I appreciate all the comments. I suppose I've never had a love affair with this car as many here do. Perhaps coming from a 375 rwhp Formula, this car had underlying expectations that it could never live up to. To me, it's just a fun to drive car that fits my current needs well. I realize that ultimately, it all boils down to personal my own personal decision. But, it's time to get serious about doing one thing or the other... get the SVT up to speed and keep it there, or cut her loose and start fresh....

Can I ask without being rude, what care have you given it? I have a 98 with 117k miles on it and I've had no problems with it, "until now that I have bragged about it"

You didn't come across as rude at all

Well, without boring everyone with specifics --

I've taken care of the basics - shocks, plugs/wires, air and fuel filters, trans fluid, coolant, brake pads/rotors... It gets washed regularly (along with a coat of Zaino every 6 months or so) and most days, it's in my garage. I've tried to keep up with the various little bits that go wrong ALL the time, but with time, I got behind...

Right now, the LCA's along with no doubt other suspension bits are in desperate need of replacement as the violent jarring over road imperfections is nearly unbearable.

The transmission is iffy about getting into 1st, 3rd and 4th... I would assume the clutch is nearing the end of it's life. The trans is a very large ticket item for what is considered an economy car.

I wouldn't consider an SVT and economy car. Escort, Eco, Civic, Sunfire, are enconomy cars.

Back when they were being produced they were being compared to Audi's & BMW's.
