By 2005 I was averaging $1500 every six months to keep the Contour on the road (a few times that was a $1300 or so bill from a week's stay at the stealership). When I was feeling the auto start to bog on cold starts and shift hard between 1-2, I got rid of the car. It was my first car (so to speak) and I was extremely attached to it, but it was really more economically smart to get a car loan on something more reliable.

Like stated above no car payment.
I have a 99 LX contour with 76,600 miles on it and I love it. I wish I had an SVT with that kind of mileage on it. I say keep the SVT cause its a rare car. Look into getting an economical car to get you from point A to B. and with some time and savings fix the SVT for sunny day driving. That would be ideal. But look at what fits your budget. Good luck on what ever you decide to do. I had a hard time selling my 1990 jeep with a BUNCH load of problems for $250 (i paid $500).

Bills are a fact of life, car payment being one.
I have a newer car with a warranty on it. Something goes wrong I just bring it to them to get it fixed. Even though I'm a mechanic myself, I'm not going to spend my time fixing my car if its under warranty.
So far I've owned my car from 8k to 23k and have less than $125 invested in it. Thats just doing oil changes which I did them all myself.
Its much cheaper to dump a problem car and get a new one that you wont have to fix it everytime you turn the key on.

I've danced around this decision for months now. My car has 115K and is paid off, but I've had to sink alot of money into it recently, in repairs. I've considered selling it very seriously, but in the end it didn't seem worth it, as I don't know what I'd want to replace it with that's in my price range. I put up with it for now since it's paid off, and the issues that need fixing should cost me relatively little. If "relatively little" becomes "alot" then I may sell it, or just park it and buy something cheap to drive for awhile. The bottom line though, is this is one of those cars that tugs at my heartstrings even when it's broken and sucking my wallet dry ...

I look at it like this:
Any car that I would be satisfied with is over $30,000...and my payments would be >$500 a month...now I'm not putting in $6000 a year on my SVT...so for me for now it continues to be the cheaper option. Plus that damn emotional attachment thing I have for it..
Now, the new Mazdaspeed 3 just might change my mind ;-)

I'm done modifying my car. The 3rd synchro bug is finally reaching my car and my clutch assembly is out of balance. With 96K on it, I'm just going to do normal maintenence for now on. Although when the trans and cltuch go I'll calling TH and Spec.

The problem is that you likely don't budget enough or actually perform regular maintenance or preventative maintenance. I say this because I do it myself. You don't have to buy a new car to get a reliable car. I bought a 99 Ranger with 55k on it for 10k and impeccable service records. Served my purpose with a less then $200 a month payment.

This is the way I look at it. What car has the fun of the svt contour? Now how much is that car gonna cost you a month in insurance and car payment in comparison to your svt. I figure if my car motor goes and I am really tight for money I can always just drop another 2.5 right back in it just to drive it. Same with the trans/clutch. I got PLPD insurance on mine and if I got a new car I would have to go to full coverage. Cost effective. Also everyone whines about how horrible of a money pit these cars are and I have not yet to experience that. I have had my cars since halloween and all I have done is water pump(warranty) and oil and air filter changes. Just my 2 cents

You were concerned about reliability so you upgraded to an 89 Probe?
