....now how can anyone answer that?...Do you know what
you are looking for when you open it up?...Do you know
how to assess wear on components in an MTX?......and
would you know for example how to fix say a 3rd or 4th
gear worn blocker ring if you found it?....Think about
it!!!!

I hope you post TWO how to's. One for each type of output shaft and pinion assembly. One with two piece or 3 piece output shaft and with part numbers.

I'm kinna curious here...

I remember a lot of jive about not needing to shim a new diff. I still wanted to do it "by the book" so I checked the preload but prior to that I tried to order the shims just in case. Preload was well within spec despite my new Torsen and bearings. They do not exsist from Ford. Anything you order from Ford comes from MicroCad (the program they use to order parts). It does not exsist on the exploded view nor does it exsist in the service manual.

TOB

In the Ford service manual it claims NSR. I didn't use any sealer and I have no leaks.

BUNK!...to check the pre-load you need the 1.10 MM reference shim from the shim pack...I doubt the pre-load has been checked 'by the book'. In the clutch section it says 'apply sealer' to the new TOB before fitting. Ask Biggers what happens when you don't apply the (correct) Permatex to the TOB.

Why would you call me a liar? I most certianly did do it by the book. The special tool used to check for preload is actually an old Rotunda valve spring compressor. As for the shim there was one in there from the factory. And in the 2000 workshop manual it does not say to apply sealer to the TOB.

because you state you did not get a Ford shim pack. The shim pack contains the reference 1.10 MM shim. This is placed in the trans first, the end float/slack is measured with a dial gage, then you do the math per the book to establish the correct thickness shim to get the correct pre-load. Without building it up with a 1.10 MM shim you have no measurement. So how can the pre-load be correct?!

And I did measure the float or lack there of with a dial indicator. What do you think Ford uses the valve spring compressor for.
