You CAN just stick it in drive and go. Or, you can put it in first, and go up sequentially, like a manu-matic. The ratchet only allows you one movement per push, i.e. it won't let you throw from 1 to 3. You have to take pressure off of it, allowing the mechanical inertia mechanism that blocks it to reset. Then, you can push it again to go up a gear. So, you just slam that [censored] without thinking.... it's fun in high HP cars.
Although, it sounds like Dean is going to bring new meaning to "Slap-shifter."
Looking good!
I understand that part, im curious how it works ont he contours automatic. Will dean have the ability to select gears like that? I know on some automatics you can put it in 'low' and shift up but once you climb the revs, the PCM will shift it for you wether you want to or not.

This is a good read! Hell I'd buy a car that had a transmission like that. What are it's downfalls? (maintenence, flaws, costs) I mean they aren't in cars anymore so I'm merely curious if anyone knew why

Oh, I gotcha. Most of the Ford autos I've had stay in gear, come hell or high water (if it's in 2, it's in 2). I can't speak for the 'Tique's, though.

MATTY K, you described correctly how they work. I can drive normal without having to shift. but, when i rachet it down to 1st, it will stay in 1st even up to redline. same goes for 2nd and 3rd. oh, and where did my overdrive button go??? we put a momentary micro-switch on my dash since i only use o/d on the highways. this shifter definately works great since you can just smack it and not worry about going up 2 gears. i'm going to do rachet shifters in my accord since i hit 8,300 rpm daily in that, and my civic hatch too. but i'll use different models in each so i can see which ones are best. hopefully do those 2 cars this summer.

I had one in my '90 S10 with a 400 small block. IIRC, it was a B&M model... very nice, mated to the TH350 well. Does yours have the release you need to pull up on to get it out of Park, Dean?

It should, it's a quicksilver. I had the same one in my '71 camaro...it was alot of fun.
Looking good Dean!

I had no idea how it worked in the ford auto trannys. The only auto I had was in a stratus, and that took control if it felt like you were beating on it. I have an auto in the escape, but I dont rag on that enough to know.

Dean, that's very cool. And to think, when I used ratchet shifters back in the day, it was 'cause I didn't know how to drive a manual. Super cool that it's so practical for you. Plus, they look so damn cool
