I've seen those shifters before, and wondered just HTF they worked. What's the purpose of having 3 automatic shifters?

basically its one lever for each gear. they all start back. push the one closest to you for 1st gear... wind it out..slap the second lever forward to engage second.. etc..

You see them a lot in the drag world. I can't recall exactly what kind of drga cars have em...but if you watch it sometime, they'll do an in car ride and you can watch em. Would be sort of a pain in the ass in daily driving though...imagine pulling back 3 levers every time you stop so you can start going again...hehe.

How is this going to work in the contour? Is it just going to be used to select drive? I dont know how it would work to manually select a gear...

For those questioning the ratchet shifter (who never had old Chevy's, clearly) : You CAN just stick it in drive and go. Or, you can put it in first, and go up sequentially, like a manu-matic. The ratchet only allows you one movement per push, i.e. it won't let you throw from 1 to 3. You have to take pressure off of it, allowing the mechanical inertia mechanism that blocks it to reset. Then, you can push it again to go up a gear. So, you just slam that [censored] without thinking.... it's fun in high HP cars. Although, it sounds like Dean is going to bring new meaning to "Slap-shifter." Looking good!

its called a Lenco Transmission
Used in PRO Stock cars http://www.nhra.com/anatomy/ps_anat.htm#driver_equipment
Drivetrain
Pro Stock clutches utilize multiple discs and must be serviced after every run to maintain critical tolerances that can mean the difference between a good run or severe tire shake. Since 1973, the most popular transmission has been the Lenco planetary design, first used as a four-speed and now as a five-speed. Liberty models also are used. Both designs use the clutch only for launching the car, not shifting gears.
